The programme aimed to promote mental well-being, physical relaxation, mindfulness and a balanced lifestyle among students. Moreover, it introduced simple practices that students could include in their daily routines while managing their academic and personal responsibilities.
Mr. A. Velusamy, Retired Engineer and Yoga Teacher, served as the Resource Person and guided the students through the session.
Objectives of the Sthira Sukham Wellness Session
The programme focused on the following objectives:
- Create awareness about mental and physical well-being
- Introduce students to basic yoga practices
- Explain the importance of mindful breathing
- Encourage relaxation and a balanced lifestyle
- Help students understand the value of a calm and steady mind
- Promote concentration and mindfulness
- Encourage healthy daily habits and self-care
- Help students balance academic responsibilities with personal well-being
- Provide practical exposure to simple breathing and relaxation techniques
Thus, the programme combined yoga, mindfulness, breathing, relaxation and healthy living in a practical learning session.
Understanding the Concept of Sthira Sukham
The programme began with an introduction to the concept of “Sthira Sukham.”
The Resource Person explained the ideas of steadiness, comfort and balance in both physical and mental aspects of life. He encouraged students to understand the value of developing a calm and balanced approach to everyday situations.
Furthermore, he discussed how academic responsibilities, examinations, personal commitments and other challenges can create pressure for students.
Therefore, he encouraged them to develop greater awareness of their thoughts, breathing and daily habits.
Importance of a Calm and Steady Mind
The session highlighted the importance of maintaining a calm and steady mind while handling everyday responsibilities.
Mr. A. Velusamy explained that students often need to manage several academic and personal tasks at the same time. Consequently, developing habits that encourage relaxation and balance can help them approach their responsibilities more mindfully.
Moreover, the session encouraged students to take time for their own well-being instead of focusing only on academic commitments.
The discussion helped participants understand that mental balance and physical well-being can complement their academic journey.
Introduction to Yoga
The Resource Person introduced students to the basic principles and benefits associated with yoga.
He explained that yoga involves more than physical movement. It can also encourage awareness, concentration, relaxation and discipline.
Furthermore, he demonstrated simple practices that students could incorporate into their daily lives without requiring extensive time or special equipment.
The practical approach made the session easy for students to follow and understand.
Mindful Breathing Practices
Breathing formed an important part of the Sthira Sukham Wellness Session.
Mr. A. Velusamy encouraged students to pay attention to their breathing and understand the connection between breathing, concentration, relaxation and emotional balance.
Students followed simple breathing practices under his guidance. Moreover, the activity encouraged them to slow down, focus their attention and experience a period of calmness during the session.
The Resource Person also encouraged students to practise mindful breathing regularly as part of a balanced daily routine.
Posture and Relaxation
The programme also introduced students to the importance of proper posture and relaxation.
The Resource Person demonstrated simple techniques and encouraged participants to follow the instructions carefully.
In addition, students learned how conscious attention to posture, breathing and relaxation can become part of their everyday wellness practices.
The practical demonstrations helped participants understand the techniques more clearly than through explanation alone.
Breathing, Concentration and Emotional Balance
The session explored the relationship between breathing, concentration and emotional balance.
Students took part in simple guided breathing and relaxation activities. As a result, they gained direct experience of mindfulness practices rather than learning about them only in theory.
Furthermore, the Resource Person discussed how regular yoga and mindful breathing practices may support focus, relaxation, emotional balance and healthy routines.
Thus, the programme gave students simple tools that they could explore as part of their daily lives.
Promoting a Balanced Lifestyle
The programme highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Students received guidance on the value of:
- Adequate rest
- Regular physical activity
- Proper breathing
- Positive thinking
- Disciplined daily routines
- Making time for self-care
Moreover, the session encouraged students to balance these habits with their academic responsibilities.
This approach helped students understand well-being as part of everyday life rather than as a separate activity.
Breathe, Balance, Be Better
The session conveyed the meaningful message “Breathe, Balance, Be Better.”
Through this message, students learned about conscious breathing and mindfulness as simple practices that they could use during everyday situations.
Furthermore, the programme encouraged them to understand the importance of taking care of both their physical and mental well-being.
The message also reflected the central idea of the programme: developing steadiness, balance and awareness in daily life.
Interactive Practical Session
Students actively participated in the demonstrations conducted by the Resource Person.
They followed instructions related to breathing, posture and relaxation. Moreover, the interactive format allowed them to experience the practices directly.
The practical activities also helped students understand that yoga is not limited to physical exercise. Instead, it can include awareness, concentration, breathing, relaxation and mindful living.
Thus, active participation made the session more engaging and meaningful.
Well-Being Alongside Academic Responsibilities
The programme encouraged students to consider their well-being while managing academic responsibilities.
Students often focus strongly on classes, examinations and other commitments. However, the session reminded them of the importance of adequate rest, physical activity and time for self-care.
Furthermore, the programme encouraged them to develop healthy and disciplined routines that could fit into their everyday lives.
This message helped connect wellness with the practical realities of student life.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The Sthira Sukham Wellness Session provided students with practical learning beyond their regular academic curriculum.
Students gained exposure to yoga, breathing practices, mindfulness and relaxation techniques. In addition, they learned how simple wellness practices can become part of a balanced daily routine.
The programme therefore combined awareness with practical participation.
