SPSS Workshop Enhances Quantitative Data Analysis Skills

Report on Workshop on Quantitative Data Analysis Using SPSS

The Department of Commerce and Banking & Finance, Kamaraj Women’s College, Thoothukudi, organized a Workshop on “Quantitative Data Analysis Using SPSS” on 08 June 2026 at 10.00 a.m.. The workshop was conducted to equip students with practical knowledge of statistical data analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The programme focused on developing research skills and strengthening students’ ability to analyze quantitative data for academic and professional purposes.

The SPSS Workshop provided an excellent opportunity for students to understand statistical concepts through practical learning. Moreover, the session helped participants gain confidence in applying statistical tools to research projects and business decision-making.

Objectives of the SPSS Workshop

The workshop was organized to develop students’ knowledge of quantitative research and statistical software.

  • Introduce students to SPSS software
  • Develop quantitative data analysis skills
  • Strengthen research methodology knowledge
  • Provide practical exposure to statistical techniques
  • Enhance analytical and decision-making skills
  • Prepare students for academic research projects

Therefore, the workshop enabled students to understand the practical applications of statistics in research, business, and data-driven decision-making.

Welcome Address and Introduction

The programme commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by Dr. P. Aruna Devi, Head of the Department. She welcomed the resource person, faculty members, and students to the workshop.

Furthermore, she introduced the resource person, Dr. M. Thanga Jesu Sathis, and highlighted the objectives of the programme. She explained the growing importance of quantitative data analysis in higher education, research, and business management. She also emphasized how SPSS has become an essential tool for researchers, academicians, and industry professionals.

Introduction to SPSS Software

The resource person delivered an informative and interactive session introducing the fundamentals of SPSS. Participants were familiarized with the software interface and learned how SPSS simplifies statistical analysis for research and business applications.

The introductory session covered:

  • Overview of SPSS software
  • SPSS interface and navigation
  • Data entry procedures
  • Variable definition and coding
  • Data organization and management

Consequently, students gained a clear understanding of the basic structure and functionality of SPSS.

Statistical Techniques Covered

The workshop provided detailed explanations of descriptive and inferential statistical methods commonly used in research studies.

The resource person demonstrated descriptive statistical techniques such as:

  • Frequency distribution
  • Mean
  • Standard deviation

In addition, participants were introduced to important inferential statistical tests, including:

  • t-Test
  • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
  • Correlation Analysis
  • Chi-Square Test

Moreover, the practical explanations helped students understand when and how each statistical technique can be applied in research.

Hands-on Practical Training

One of the major highlights of the SPSS Workshop was the hands-on practical session conducted using a sample dataset.

Participants gained practical experience in:

  • Importing data into SPSS
  • Entering and editing datasets
  • Performing statistical analyses
  • Interpreting SPSS output
  • Preparing research findings and reports

Furthermore, the resource person provided step-by-step guidance throughout the practical session, making complex statistical concepts easier to understand.

Interactive Learning Experience

The workshop encouraged active student participation through demonstrations, discussions, and practical exercises.

Students interacted freely with the resource person and clarified their doubts regarding statistical techniques, SPSS functions, and research applications. Consequently, the interactive learning environment enhanced students’ confidence in using statistical software independently.

The practical approach made the workshop highly engaging and beneficial for participants.

Learning Outcomes

The SPSS Workshop significantly enhanced students’ research capabilities and practical analytical skills.

The participants successfully developed:

  • Knowledge of SPSS software
  • Quantitative data analysis skills
  • Research methodology competence
  • Statistical interpretation abilities
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Confidence in handling academic research projects

Moreover, the workshop prepared students to apply statistical techniques in dissertations, research papers, surveys, and business analytics.

Question-and-Answer Session

The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students discussed statistical concepts, SPSS applications, and research methodologies with the resource person.

The session provided valuable clarification and further strengthened participants’ understanding of quantitative data analysis.

Vote of Thanks

The workshop concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks. Gratitude was expressed to Dr. M. Thanga Jesu Sathis for delivering an informative and practical training session. Appreciation was also extended to the management, faculty members, organizers, and participants for making the workshop a great success.

Conclusion

The Workshop on Quantitative Data Analysis Using SPSS was highly informative, practical, and beneficial. The programme successfully enhanced students’ understanding of statistical analysis and strengthened their practical skills in using SPSS for academic research and business applications.

Overall, the workshop equipped participants with valuable analytical competencies that will support their higher education, research activities, and future professional careers.
