Mock Interview Training Builds Career Confidence at KWC
Report on Mock Interview Training Programme
The Mock Interview Training programme was organized by the Department of Commerce and Banking & Finance, Kamaraj Women’s College, Thoothukudi, in collaboration with NPTEL–IIT Madras on 3 September 2026. The programme was conducted online from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and aimed to improve students’ interview skills, confidence and readiness for future employment opportunities.
The programme was arranged for students who had attended the Soft Skill Training Programme conducted from 3 July to 9 July 2026. Thus, the mock interview served as a practical follow-up to their earlier training and gave them an opportunity to apply the skills they had learned.
Objectives of the Mock Interview Training
The programme focused on the following objectives:
- Provide practical exposure to the interview process
- Improve students’ communication and presentation skills
- Build confidence while facing interviews
- Assess grooming and professional behaviour
- Improve body language and eye contact
- Develop clarity while answering interview questions
- Help students identify their strengths and areas for improvement
- Prepare students for future employment opportunities
Therefore, the programme combined practical assessment, skill development and career preparation.
Follow-Up to Soft Skill Training
The Mock Interview Programme was conducted as a follow-up activity for students who had participated in the Soft Skill Training Programme from 3 July to 9 July 2026.
The earlier training helped students develop essential skills required for academic and professional growth. Following this, the mock interview gave them an opportunity to test these skills in an interview setting.
Moreover, the activity helped students understand how communication, confidence and professional behaviour contribute to interview performance.
Online Mock Interview Sessions
The programme was conducted in online mode from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
IIT Madras divided the participating students into nine groups, and each group was assigned an individual interviewer. This arrangement provided students with focused interaction and an opportunity to experience an interview in a structured environment.
During the sessions, the interviewers asked various questions and assessed the students based on their responses and overall presentation.
Individual Interaction with Interviewers
Interaction with individual interviewers formed the central part of the Mock Interview Training.
The students responded to different interview questions and experienced the process of communicating with an interviewer directly. As a result, they gained practical exposure to situations similar to those they may encounter during future employment interviews.
Furthermore, the experience helped students understand the importance of listening carefully, organizing their thoughts and responding with confidence and clarity.
Assessment of Grooming and Courtesy
Grooming and courtesy formed part of the assessment criteria.
Students were evaluated on how they presented themselves during the interview and how professionally they interacted with the interviewer.
The activity therefore helped students understand that interview performance involves more than answering questions correctly. Professional appearance, respectful communication and appropriate behaviour also contribute to creating a positive impression.
Body Language and Eye Contact
The interviewers also assessed the students’ body language and eye contact.
Positive body language can communicate confidence and attentiveness. Similarly, appropriate eye contact plays an important role in effective communication, including during online interviews.
Therefore, the programme encouraged students to become more aware of their non-verbal communication and understand its role in professional interactions.
Clarity and Confidence
Clarity and confidence were two other important areas of evaluation.
Students were encouraged to express their ideas clearly and respond to questions confidently. Through the mock interview experience, they could understand how well they communicated their thoughts under interview conditions.
Moreover, the sessions helped students recognize areas where they needed further practice. This practical experience can help them approach future interviews with better preparation and greater confidence.
Practical Exposure to the Interview Process
The Mock Interview Training provided valuable practical exposure that complemented classroom learning and soft skill development.
Students experienced the structure of an interview, interacted with interviewers and responded to different questions. Consequently, they gained a clearer understanding of what employers may expect during recruitment.
The programme also helped students recognize that successful interview performance requires a combination of communication, confidence, professional behaviour and preparation.
Identifying Strengths and Areas for Improvement
An important benefit of the programme was that students could identify their individual strengths and areas requiring improvement.
The assessment criteria gave them a clear understanding of different aspects of interview performance. Therefore, students could reflect on their grooming, courtesy, body language, eye contact, clarity and confidence.
Such awareness can help students prepare more effectively for future interviews and gradually strengthen their professional skills.
Career Readiness and Employability
The programme contributed to improving students’ career readiness and employability skills.
Academic qualifications are important for employment. However, candidates also need effective communication, confidence and professional presentation to perform well during recruitment.
Therefore, practical activities such as mock interviews help bridge the gap between academic preparation and workplace expectations.
In addition, students can explore career and employment resources through the National Career Service of the Government of India.
Programme Coordination
The programme was organized by Dr. P. Aruna Devi, Department of Commerce and Banking & Finance.
The collaboration with NPTEL–IIT Madras provided students with an opportunity to experience structured interview assessment and apply the soft skills developed during their earlier training.
The initiative reflected the department’s focus on preparing students for employment and helping them develop the professional skills required for their future careers.

The Mock Interview Training provided several valuable outcomes for the participating students:
