Inspiring International Mother Language Day 2026
International Mother Language Day
When a language breathes, a culture lives. When words flourish, identities strengthen. And truly, when the mother tongue rises, the nation rises. With this profound belief, Kamaraj Women’s College, Thoothukudi, celebrated International Mother Language Day on 20 February 2026 with dignity, pride, and cultural devotion.
The Department of Tamil – Bharathiyar Mandram organized the celebration to honor linguistic heritage and to remind students that language is not merely a medium of communication, but the heartbeat of civilization. In an era shaped by globalization and digital transformation, preserving one’s mother tongue becomes not just an act of tradition, but an act of cultural responsibility.
Therefore, this celebration served as both a tribute and a commitment — a tribute to Tamil and a commitment to protect linguistic identity for generations to come.
The Global Significance of International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day, observed worldwide on February 21, promotes linguistic diversity and multilingual education. UNESCO established this day to protect endangered languages and to encourage respect for cultural plurality. Consequently, educational institutions across the globe observe this day to preserve linguistic roots.
Language carries history, literature, folklore, and ancestral wisdom. Moreover, it binds communities across time. When students strengthen their mother tongue, they strengthen their cultural foundation. Thus, the celebration reinforced that safeguarding language means safeguarding heritage.

In her felicitation address, she spoke passionately about the emotional power of language. She explained that language shapes thought, thought shapes action, and action shapes society. Furthermore, she encouraged students to speak their mother tongue with pride and to cherish it as a symbol of identity.
Subsequently, the Secretary of the college, Mr. S. Ramachandran, delivered the special address as Chief Guest. He emphasized that while modernization expands opportunities, it must never overshadow cultural heritage. Instead, he urged students to use technology and digital platforms to promote Tamil literature and language globally.
Inter-Collegiate Competitions
To make the celebration engaging and vibrant, the organizers conducted several inter-collegiate competitions. Students from 20 colleges participated enthusiastically. As a result, the campus radiated intellectual energy and creative expression.
