Thus, the programme focused on preparing students for a smooth transition from college to the professional world.
Resource Person
The resource person was Mr. Sriram S., Assistant Manager – HR, Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited, Thoothukudi.
Drawing from his professional experience in Human Resources, he shared practical insights into what industries expect from young graduates. In addition, he guided students on how they can prepare themselves effectively for recruitment and employment opportunities.
His industry-based approach helped students understand workplace expectations from an employer’s perspective.
Importance of Communication Skills
During the session, Mr. Sriram S. highlighted the importance of effective communication skills in the workplace.
He explained that good communication helps employees express their ideas clearly, interact professionally with colleagues and handle workplace situations with confidence. Therefore, students should develop their communication abilities alongside their academic knowledge.
Furthermore, he discussed practical ways to improve communication and encouraged students to practise speaking, listening and presenting their ideas clearly.
Interview Preparation and Confidence
Another major part of the session focused on interview preparation.
The resource person explained that success in an interview depends on more than academic qualifications. Candidates should also demonstrate confidence, effective communication, appropriate presentation and the ability to respond clearly to questions.
He encouraged students to prepare thoroughly before attending interviews and to understand the expectations of the organization and the role for which they apply.
The session also highlighted the importance of:
- Self-confidence
- Clear communication
- Professional presentation
- Positive body language
- Listening carefully to questions
- Giving clear and relevant answers
- Maintaining a professional attitude
As a result, students gained a clearer understanding of how to approach interviews confidently and professionally.
Knowledge Versus Skills
A key focus of the guest lecture was the difference between knowledge and skills.
The resource person explained that academic knowledge gives students an essential foundation. However, industries also expect graduates to know how to apply that knowledge effectively in practical situations.
He stressed that technical knowledge alone may not be enough to succeed in a professional environment. Instead, students should combine academic learning with communication, problem-solving, teamwork and other practical abilities.
Consequently, he encouraged students to continue developing their skills throughout their college education rather than waiting until graduation.
Practical Mock Interview Sessions
One of the most engaging parts of the programme was the mock interview session.
Mr. Sriram S. conducted practical interview demonstrations with selected students. This activity allowed participants to experience an interview situation directly and understand how employers may assess candidates.
During the demonstrations, students learned the importance of confidence, body language, communication and appropriate responses. Moreover, observing their classmates helped the other participants identify common interview challenges and learn how to handle them effectively.
The practical activity transformed the session from a lecture into an experiential learning opportunity.
Understanding Industry Requirements
The resource person also helped students understand the broader expectations of employers.
He explained that companies look for graduates who can adapt to workplace situations, communicate effectively, learn continuously and apply their knowledge in practical settings. Therefore, students need to develop a combination of academic knowledge, technical abilities and soft skills.
The session encouraged participants to assess their own strengths and identify areas where they need further improvement.
Interactive Learning Experience
The programme remained highly interactive throughout the session. Students listened attentively, participated in the practical activities and gained useful insights from the resource person’s industry experience.
Furthermore, the combination of explanations and mock interviews made the programme relevant to students preparing to enter the workforce.
The interaction also encouraged students to view skill development as a continuous process that should begin during their college years.
